Maui is paradise! Or at least that was my takeaway from my mini weekend trip last weekend. I know I just came back from London but I had a good excuse to take this trip to Maui and couldn’t have come at a better time! We have been experiencing some gloomy weather in California lately so it was nice to leave that behind for a while to warm up.
The main reason why I went to Maui was to attend a wedding. My aunt (we are not blood related but we are practically like family) has a son who was having his wedding there. My parents have known him since he was little so they wanted to be there on his big day. Originally, I wasn’t planning to go because I had just come back from Japan and London. Taking another trip didn’t seem right with my work schedule but I got lucky because the wedding was held on the same weekend where I had Monday off for Martin Luther King day. So I decided to seize the moment and request Friday off so I could spent 3 nights in Maui. I am so happy I decided to take this trip because it was a wonderful way for me to relax and take a moment to reflect with my own thoughts.
Something that has been on my mind lately is the fashion aspect of this blog. Back in September of last year I wrote a blog post where I share my thoughts on how I thought it was tough being a fashion blogger ( you can read the blog post here). I remember being so scared of hitting the publish icon for that blog post because I didn’t know how people were going to react. Thankfully, the feedback I got was so encouraging and helpful that it really pushed me in a positive way to want to continue my journey of creating fashion related content on this platform.
Towards the end of last year, I was lucky enough to work with a few fashion brands which is something I have never done before. It was fun coming up with the ideas and concepts behind the shoots I was producing. This was definitely one of the highlights of 2016 and it was a step towards the right direction in a sense of what type of content I would like to create on here.
With that said, when I had brands to work with I felt like it was a bit easier because I would get one or two items of clothing (in exchange for a blog post) and that allowed me to just coordinate the clothing I got with what I had in my closet already. However, when I had no brands to work with I noticed I struggled in creating fashion related content on here. The honest reason is because I felt like I was what I call a “bargain” fashion blogger. Most of the stuff in my closet is something I bought on sale or at an outlet. I also typically don’t purchase any designer bags or accessories either.
I just felt a bit self conscious on posting photos of myself wearing jeans I got for $10 at a store I don’t even remember the name of by the time I am sharing it on my blog. I also felt self conscious for wearing these same pair of jeans in almost every shoot.
When I would shop for new clothes, I kept thinking thoughts like “is this trendy?” or “can I link this item on my blog to share with my readers?”. After a while, these thoughts just started to take a toll and I noticed I was feeling less and less motivated to create fashion content on this blog.
Right before this Maui trip, I needed to get a dress to wear for the wedding and I struggled to find something good for the warm weather when every store is still selling winter clothes. I decided to try and see if Forever 21 had anything and that’s when I spotted this lovely boho chic floral maxi dress. I was even more pleased when I saw the tag and the dress was marked at $10!! What a steal!
At first, I wasn’t planning to do a photoshoot while I was in Maui with this dress but after having some time to reflect about this ongoing issue I was having. I decided it was about time I dealt with my thoughts and figured out what I wanted to do going forward.
I think going forward, I am just going to be more honest then I was before. If I bought something on sale like this dress for example. I am going to say I got it for $10 and there is no link on Forever 21 because it’s probably something from last season. And, I am going to leave it at that and not care.
I think I put some much thought on being able to link stuff and share exactly where I got an item that is was driving me insane.
So sorry to those of you who enjoy being able to know where you can purchase items when you see fashion related blog posts. But I am going to just choose to be the honest version of myself and the honest version of myself really doesn’t give an F about links.
With that said, going forward I probably will be working with other brands to create content on here. Usually, brands want you to link their items because the more clicks and views they get the better. What I have been trying stray away from is using affiliate links because to me it doesn’t seem right to be taking money in addition to the gifted item(s) I received. I know eventually, I will have to start using those if I want to generate an income on here but I just don’t think my blog is at the level yet. So for now, if I share links they will most likely be non affiliated links. If things change in the coming months, I will be sure to let you all know but until then I think this is how I will be functioning for the rest of the year.
With all of that said here are the details for my outfit on this blog:
Dress: $10 from Forever 21, Sandals: I forgot where I got them, Necklace: Forever 21 (last season), Ring & Earrings: Primark for 2 pounds, Clutch: Fake Tory I got years ago when I was in Taiwan, Sunglasses: Gifted from Sunglass.LA (Finally, I have a link for you for that one & of course the link is not affiliated).
